Jaswinder Singh Bains, originally from India, obtained his PhD in Biology from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, in 1991. Following his doctoral studies, he pursued a research associateship in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary from 1992 to 1996, focusing on genes associated with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and age-related diseases. He then transitioned to the University of British Columbia from 1996 to 1999, delving into neurophysiology and investigating the toxicity of drugs on brain. In parallel to his academic pursuits, Dr. Bains embarked on a journey in optometry, enrolling at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, USA, For education in clinical sciences. In 2006, he returned to Calgary, Canada, where he dedicated the next 18 years to serving over 100,000 patients in the field of optometry. His extensive experience and expertise have positioned him as a trusted healthcare professional, committed to delivering high-quality eye care services to his community.

Medical & Urgent Eye Care (Coverage under Alberta Health Care Services)
- All Albertans have access to medical and urgent eye care provided by an optometrist
- Alberta Health coverage is available towards medically necessary and urgent care appointments
- A referral is not required
- Most optometrists will see patients the same day if the matter is urgent
- Optometrists have the proper knowledge, tools and equipment necessary to diagnose, treat, prescribe medications, and referral to a specialist, if needed

- Infection, injury or inflammation of the eye and eyelid
- Dry eye
- Foreign objects in the eye
- Sudden changes in the vision
- Monitoring for diabetes and glaucoma complications
